The Institution

Luigi Giussani Institute of Higher Education (LGIHE) is an innovative learning space responding to educational gaps through a human encounter that starts with the discovery of one’s inherent dignity and gradually unlocking the human full potential in the educational journey towards self-awareness.

In September 2013, Luigi Giussani Institute of Higher Education (LGIHE) obtained accreditation as an institution of higher learning by the National Council of Higher Education (NCHE)

LGIHE is also part of the Regional Education Learning Initiative (RELI Africa), a network of over 70 organizations spread across East Africa (Uganda, Kenya & Tanzania) working towards advancing equitable learning outcomes for children through shared learning. RELI’s long-term goal is to empower its members to become effective and influential organizations capable of influencing policies and practices towards improved learning outcomes across the region. The three specific objectives of RELI revolve around better coordination & alignment, increased member capacity and policy influence for improved learning outcomes.

LGIHE is currently the Country Host Hub of RELI Uganda (a platform of 19 organisations), coordinating and providing virtual and physical hosting of its related initiatives.

Creating opportunities for professional and personal development, which starts from the dignity and infinite value of the person and are developed through a method of personal engagement with one’s life and the meaning of one’s work.


LGIHE’s motto states that “OMNIA POSSUM IN EO QUI ME CONFORTAT” (translated as “With our Hands but with His Support). The Vision and Mission of LGIHE reflect the meaning contained in the Institute’s motto but also depict the philosophy of the institution.

We embrace an educational philosophy that seeks to help students and educators discover their identity, self-worth and sense of belonging. We explore a learner’s growth in self-awareness, their understanding of the world, and their development of competences needed to face life’s challenges. If we gaze upon the person while recognizing his/her value and dignity, Then we shall be able to foster a sense of belonging that reawakens a self-awareness infront of reality. If the person becomes self-aware, Then everything that he/she encounters becomes meaningful and interesting. If the person discovers the meaning of reality, Then he/she engages with reality and becomes capable of confronting daily life situations with unwavering positivity and openness.

Our Educational Journey

Our story commenced with a simple dialogue among 5 friends in Uganda; their discussion mainly revolved around educational challenges faced in Uganda and possible ways on how to tackle them.

This paved way for professional development trainings that were conducted informally (2002). In January 2009, Luigi Giussani Institute of Higher Education (LGIHE) became a fully registered Social Enterprise.

In September 2013, Luigi Giussani Institute of Higher Education (LGIHE) obtained accreditation as an institution of higher learning from the National Council of Higher Education (NCHE)

Why we are different

Our educational approach is informed by innovative research that addresses
educational setbacks at grassroot level, through continual accompaniment of the
educator. This in turn ignites dynamic change in the learner thus rendering her a
protagonist of her own life and that of her environment.
